Urban League of Rhode Island

The Urban League of Rhode Island, Inc. (ULRI), founded in 1939, is a community-based, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. It's mission is the elimination of racial discrimination and segregation in the state, the achievement of parity for Blacks, minorities and the poor in every phase of American life. This mission inherently involves the enabling of African Americans, other persons of color and the economically disadvantaged to demonstrate their full potential and to exercise their human rights as American citizens. ULRI is one of over 95 affiliates of the National Urban League, and implements its' mission through advocacy, program service delivery, bridge-building among the races, and research. The ULRI's Board of Directors provides the guidance to effectively serve the varied communities of the State of Rhode Island. It assists members of its constituencies in developing strategies and techniques to bring about positive changes in policies and institutions that adversely affect their lives. ULRI's current focus is to reduce and ultimately eliminate the employment gap for Black/African Americans in the state by targeting individuals & families who are employable, yet are unemployed and/or underemployed. ULRI aims to increase access to workforce education and training, remove or reduce barriers to employment, and increase the rate of Black/African American business ownership. ULRI's vision is that Black/African-American residents and newcomers attain sufficient success and motivate them to remain in Rhode Island and contribute to the economic, cultural, and social vitality of the state.
